The mission of the Arborist Department is two-fold.
Our first mission is beautification of Ashland's streets and parks. By maintaining existing tree growth as well as planting new growth, we have helped make Ashland a Tree City U.S.A.
The second mission of the department is keeping the city streets and parks as safe as possible through corrective tree care, and tree removal when necessary.
The Arborist Department is a division under the City Parks and Recreation Department.
Our arborists are trained professionals who are knowledgeable and equipped to provide proper tree care. They are specially trained to provide a variety of services to maintain trees. Our certified arborists have achieved a level of knowledge in the art and science of tree care through at least three years of experience and have passed a comprehensive examination. The arborists continue their education in order to maintain their certification, ensuring their knowledge is updated on the latest arboriculture techniques. The department has more than 40 years combined experience in caring for trees.
We have many beautification projects on our agenda including the formation and maintenance of several nature preserves.
One of the preserves is Sandusky Hollow which has five nature trails where visitors may encounter numerous native plants, trees and wildlife.
Jamison Creek is another nature preserve that has one main trail along the creek bed that gives hikers the opportunity to view a healthy, aquatic habitat. A second trail at Jamison Creek also is planned on the Siler farm side of the creek. This will be an exciting addition to Ashland City Parks. In conjunction with the Ashland City Parks Department, The arborists Department Maintains the trees and landscaping within all City parks.
The Arborist Department also maintains a 400-tree nursery, north of town that supplies many of the new trees planted annually throughout the city. New trees are planted when safety requires removal of a dangerous tree.
New trees also are replacing older trees that have the potential for disrupting utility services. The new trees planted are more suitable to the locations around power lines, and other utilities. These trees will require less maintenance by both Arborist Department and local utility companies.
All trees with the city right-of-way are owned and maintained by the Ashland Arborist Department. Homeowner and business, bu law, many not trim, plant or remove any trees within these limits. Issues involving these trees must be directed tot he Arborist Department.
The Ashland Arborist Department also offers several services to homeowners within the city such as brush removal and delivery of mulch and unseasoned firewood. Call our office for rates.
All brush is chipped and recycled as mulch which is used for City landscaping projects and new trees as well as for sale to homeowners. Brush to be picked up by the Arborist Department should be placed on the tree lawn with the brush ends facing one direction.
The Arborist Department also offers free removal of Christmas trees from December 26 through January 31. All trees must be free of lights, decorations and stands and may not be wrapped in plastic. Trees not placed on the tree lawn for pickup prior to January 31, will need to be handled as a request for brush removal.
The arborists Department enjoys serving the Ashland Community and looks forward to keeping Ashland a beautiful and safe place to live.
