MINUTES FOR THE SPECIAL SESSION OF COUNCIL
Wednesday, January 2, 2008



Council President Glen Stewart called the meeting to order at 7:00 PM  

Note: The only thing that will be discussed tonight is what is on the agenda and what I am going to do is ask for the Roll to be called for Council.

PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE


LEGISLATION: None

Glen Stewart:  Welcome everyone; it is going to be a very quick meeting as I see it right now.
There is no legislation.  We cannot take any comments on any items other that what would only
appear on the agenda.   Since there is nothing on the legislative portion of the agenda the,
 there is not much that can be commented on there.  So at this point we are going to move into
 New Business.  

New Business:  
(a)    Appointment of a new Mayor to replace Mayor Strine for the two years remaining in his term.

Mr. Stewart, I nominate Mr. Stewart to be Mayor of Ashland Ohio by Paul Wertz, seconded by Ruth Detrow.

Glen Stewart:  I am humbled by the confidence that this Council has shown me by appointing me as your Mayor for the balance of Mayor Strine’s term.  I accept the appointment with this promise:  “I will carry out the responsibilities of the Mayor’s office to the best of my ability being straightforward and honest.  I am looking forward to working with a team that has much to offer our community in the future.  Thank you Council.”

New Business (cont’d)

(b)    Election of a Council President:  

I nominate Paul Wertz as Council President, by Ruth Detrow, seconded by Robert L. Valentine W1.  

Comments or Questions?   None

Ayes: Robert L. Valentine W1, Robert M. Valentine W2, Ruth Detrow, Paul Wertz.

Paul Wertz:  I hope I do half as good a job as Glen Stewart has done as President and then we will be moving in the right direction.  I will do my best.

Glen Stewart:  You will do well.

MAYOR’S COMMENTS:  

New Mayor, Glen Stewart: Again, I want to share with everyone that tomorrow morning at 8:30, we are going to have our first Senior Leadership meeting under my direction and obviously we have done some pre-planning on that with some assumption in mind but it went well this evening, so if you all can be there in the morning, I appreciate it.  We will start at 8:30 in the morning and we will go from there.

Robert L. Valentine W1: With Glen having as much experience as he has had in the past and also his experience on Council too, I think this puts him in the position as Mayor as I think he understands the whole gambit of things.  I think that is certainly the direction we wanted to go.  Also Paul with the experience he has.  How many years have you been on Council?

Paul Wertz: “twenty-two-many.”

Robert L. Valentine W1:  I think the two people that we have appointed, is certainly well worth the appointment.  Looking forward to a good year.

Motion to adjourn the Special Meeting by Paul Wertz, Council President, moved by Robert L. Valentine W1 to adjourn, seconded by Robert M. Valentine W2.
