Building and Zoning

The Building Department is responsible for the enforcement of the various building codes and ordinances relating to the construction, alteration, repair of, addition to, and demolition of buildings, houses, garages, sheds, fences and other structures in the City.

The Zoning Code governs various items such as permitted uses in various zoning districts, setbacks of building and parking lots from property lines, percentage of a parcel that can be covered by buildings, and the number of parking spaces required for a building.

We are currently in the Process of modernizing our Department and Permit procedures.  We are working towards becoming a fully certified Residential Building Department through the State of Ohio.  We are also working towards streamlining the permit process so that we can ensure consistency and ease of use.

Commercial Permits are still required to be processed through the State of Ohio's Bureau of Building Code Compliance.

We are also in process of preparing legislation to allow for Contractor Registration for work performed "for profit" within City limits.  Registering Contractors will assist the City in safeguarding consumer's rights related to contracted improvements.

Please be sure to call the Building Department prior to performing any Commercial or Residential construction so that we can guide you through the process during this transitional period.
