Job Notice

The City of Ashland has openings for a full-time Secretary in the Parks Department, Jason Counts, Director.


Applications will be accepted from February 10, 2020-February 24, 2020 in the Human Resources Department (8:00am-4:00pm, Monday-Friday). Applicants may take the Civil Service Test any time during normal business hours or by appointment.



What you'll do:

  • Perform various secretarial tasks, in order to assist the Director of Parks & Recreation:
    • schedule and confirm appointments
    • greet and assist visitors to the office
    • receive and screen calls
    • receive and distribute mail
    • type various documents (correspondences, reports, memos, forms, etc)
    • maintain departmental record keeping system
    • etc.
  • Perform general accounting functions:
    • prepare financial reports
    • prepare departmental payroll
    • balance departmental accounts
    • prepare and make deposits
    • etc.
  • Perform clerical tasks:
    • filing
    • make copies
    • order office supplies
    • ensure office equipment is maintained properly
    • etc.
  • Miscellaneous duties as assigned

Compensation and Benefits:

  • Wages: hourly pay $14.00-$32.22, commensurate with experience and internal equity

  • Pension through Ohio Public Employees' Retirement System (OPERS), with The City contributing an additional 14% and employees contributing 10% of wages
  • Available 457 Plan (similar to a 401k, but for public sector employees)

We're looking for someone who:

  • Has a HS diploma or GED, supplemented by general business and secretarial science courses, plus two years of secretarial experience or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Considers integrity, customer service, and accuracy to be the highest priorities
  • Has a working knowledge of standard office equipment (PCs, multi-line telephone system, copier, scanner, fax, etc.)
  • Is skilled in modern business office practices, business English, and general accounting practices
  • Has excellent communication skills with direct reports, Finance Director, across departments, and with the public and can communicate effectively, in-person and via telephone, email, and other correspondence
  • Is well organized
  • Can learn quickly, thoroughly, and in detail
  • Can multi-task, is adaptable, and is comfortable with changing conditions and priorities when "something comes up"
