The City of Ashland has openings for full-time Utility Operators in a variety of departments.

What  You'll Do:

  • Inspects treatment plant on scheduled basis to ensure proper operation of equipment and makes necessary adjustments to treatment process (e.g., reads gauges and records readings, changes charts, adjusts flow of chemical feeders, examines pumps, regulates valves, etc.).
  • Collects samples for laboratory testing and analysis and conducts routine testing; record results of testing.
  • Performs preventative and service maintenance on equipment and facilities (e.g., lubricates motors, pumps, and other moving parts, changes oil, adjusts belts, washes filters, etc.). Performs skilled mechanical installations, maintenance, and repair work on treatment facilities and equipment (installs and repairs pumps, blowers, compressors, motors, etc.); assembles and installs new equipment; checks equipment to ensure proper operation.
  • Receives and responds to complaints or inquiries from the general public; notifies other departments if the call involves other City services; records calls received and action taken.
  • Demonstrates regular and predictable attendance.
  • Maintains required licensure and certification.
  • Completes basic housekeeping assignments (e.g., sweeps and mops floors, cleans restrooms and windows, empties trash, mows grass, etc.); unloads and stores chemicals and other supplies.
  • Assists maintenance personnel with major repairs of equipment, or if mechanically inclined, completes repairs and PM independently.
  • Reviews operating manuals and other technical materials to increase knowledge and proficiency.
  • Miscellaneous duties as assigned.

We're looking for someone who:

  • Is "Dedicated to Service"
  • Has earned a high school diploma or a GED
  • Has a valid Ohio Driver's License
  • Is eligible to drive City vehicles under our vehicle insurance policy
  • Is mechanically inclined and can assist with plant maintenance (with on-the-job training)
  • Is available to work a swing shift
  • Likes to work independently, following the prescribed schedule and policies & procedures, but is willing and able to work as a team on occasion
  • Who can lift 50 pounds and up to 80 pounds with assistance
  • Willing and able to learn and follow City policies and procedures. will always consider safety as the number one priority
  • Will pursue a Class I Operator's License and progress through to a Class III License (don't worry, we'll help you!)

Compensation and Benefits


  • $15.00
  • Step and annual wage increases as outlined in the contract
  • Year round work, no furloughs
  • Pension through OPERS with the City contributing an additional 14% and employees contributing 10% of wages.

  • The City will help you earn various licensure or certifications (e.g. pesticides application, CDL, etc.)
