Utility Operator + Plant Maintenance

Job Notice

The City of Ashland has openings for full time Utility Operators/Maintenance Operating Techs at the Water Treatment and the Waste Water Pollution Plants

Applications will be accepted from November 12, 2019 until November 25, 2019 in the Human Resources Department (8:00am-4:00pm, Monday-Friday). Applicants may take the Civil Service Test during normal business hours, no appointment needed.

What You'll Do:

  • Conduct routine, scheduled inspections to ensure that equipment is operating properly
  • Read gauges, record readings, change charges, adjust the flow of the chemical feeders, examine pumps, etc.
  • Collect samples for testing and analysis
  • Conduct routine testing and document results
  • Perform preventative and service maintenance (e.g. lubricate motors, pumps, and other moving parts; changes oil; adjust belts; wash filters, etc.)
  • Receive and respond to inquiries and complaints from the public; notifies the appropriate departments; document the calls, the actions taken, and the outcomes
  • Basic housekeeping
  • Unload and store supplies
  • Assist maintenance personnel, etc.
  • Earn Class 1 Operator's License within four years of hire
  • If assigned to Maintenance Operating Tech: Performs skilled and semi-skilled building and grounds maintenance and repairs; skilled mechanical installations, maintenance, and repair work on water pollution control plants (installs and repairs pumps, blowers, compressors, motors, etc.); assembles and installs new equipment; checks equipment to ensure proper operation; completes scheduled preventative maintenance assignments (repacks pumps, lubricates pump parts, cleans filters, etc.)
  • Miscellaneous duties as assigned

Compensation and Benefits:

  • Wages: hourly pay is $14.50, without an Operator's License.  (Class I License = $15.00; Class II License = $16.00; Class III License = $17.00; Class IV = $18.50). Plus $.28 if assigned to the plant maintenance team. Plus annual increases as negotiated by AFSCME
  • Eligible day one for insurances, there is no waiting period! Available insurances:

  • Paid Time off
     -10 paid holidays
     -Sick leave begins accruing immediately, plus The City accepts sick leave transfers from qualifying public employers
     -2 weeks of vacation prorated at 1 year anniversary, the 2 weeks every January 1 after;
     -2 personal days
  • Participation in OPERS (Ohio Public Employees' Retirement System) (with the City contributing an additional 14% and employees contributing 10% of wages)
  • Available 457 Plan

We're looking for someone who:

  • Is "Dedicated to Service"
  • Has earned a high school diploma or a GED
  • Has a valid Ohio Driver's License
  • Is eligible to drive City vehicles under our vehicle insurance policy
  • Is available to work a swing shift
  • Likes to work independently, following the prescribed schedule and policies & procedures, but is willing and able to work as a team on occasion
  • Who can lift 50 pounds and up to 80 pounds with assistance
  • Willing and able to learn and follow City policies and procedures. will always consider safety as the number one priority
  • Will pursue a Class I Operator's License and progress through to a Class III License (don't worry, we'll help you!)
